Barbera is a red Italian wine grape variety originally grown in North West Italy that produces good yields and is known for deep color, low tannins and high levels of
acid. It is a popular grape most famously known for the Barbera De Asti, a red wine variety that is very well known in the region of northern Italy and in modern times is the third most planted grape in Italy. The grape itself can produce an acidic wine that has unique flavors which permeates through to delighten the senses with a bitter cherry flavor and hints of spicy notes. In order to combat this tendency of the grape to have low levels of tanins and higher acidic components, many Barbera varieties are put into oak barrels and aged between 2-4 years.
Similarly as with numerous grapes that are generally planted, there is a large assortment of Barbera wines from medium bodied, fruity wines to all the more bold ones. A few of the well known traits, to be specific, are its profound ruby shading, pink edge, detectable levels of tannins and high level of acid. The beautiful color of Barbera makes it a ideal mixing grape and it was truly utilized in the Barolo and Barberesco areas to add a darker hue to the normally light Nebbiolo grape.
At the point when Barbera is treated to barrel aging, it creates an energizing central effect on the science of the wine being matured. The outcome is a superior adjusted wine with a more profound, darker tone and upgraded aromatics and different complexities. Since Barbera is inalienably low in tannins, utilization of oak barrels can give some genuinely necessary wood tannin to the wine and along these lines upgrading the wine’s structure and intricacy. It additionally mollifies and takes the burr off Barbera’s tart sharpness. The net outcome is a less acidic, better adjusted, milder and more tannic, basement commendable wine.
And as with all of our wines, Barbera comes in two different styles:
